Playa del Inglés in Gran Canaria
It’s probably the most famous beach here in Gran Canaria, besides one of the favorite year-round destinations for countless tourists. We’re talking about Playa del Inglés, a beach close to Playa de Maspalomas – its wide golden sandy stretch even reaches to the sand dunes of Maspalomas. The beach is divided between a quieter, less developed area right next to the vast sand dunes, and an area around the old shopping mall which has been exceptionally well developed for tourism, you can choose either space and peace or positive beach energy.
Inglés beach in Gran Canaria
Located on the southern tip, Playa del Inglés is home to a real natural wonder, the sand dunes of Maspalomas, and El Oasis, the sand dunes of Playa del Inglés. One moment you are walking around the carefully tended hotel facilities and along the palm-lined promenade, and the next you suddenly find yourself stepping straight into the middle of a unique desert landscape, where you are surrounded by nothing but warm winds and peaceful silence.
Whether you rent a sun lounger with an umbrella, or simply bring your own stuff with you to the beach, you shouldn’t have any trouble finding a quiet spot on Playa del Inglés, especially at the left-hand side, beyond the promenade.
The beach is super-easy to find – just follow the appropriate street signs from Maspalomas. If you rented a car, be ready to spend some time to search a good parking lot. Unfortunately, there are few parking spaces near the Playa del Inglés. The best thing to do is to drive along the side streets where there are apartment buildings and buy a parking ticket. The alternative is to choose the buses to reach the beach – the journey will be hassle-free.
The south of Gran Canaria was discovered as a major tourist destination in the 1960s. At that time Playa del Inglés was a trailblazer, and it is still extremely popular today, despite, or perhaps even because of, its now rather outdated architecture. The combination of soft sand, crystal-clear sea, sports facilities and club life tends to attract a lot of young people.
However, Playa del Inglés is by no means just a party beach. In the natural and unspoiled parts near the sand dunes, neither shops nor crowds will disturb your enjoyment of the beach, yet you can still get an ice cream from one of the small kiosks whenever you like. While the part of the beach around the old shopping mall has been exceptionally well developed for tourism – a promenade packed with shops, bars, and restaurants.
Jet-skiing, parasailing, banana boating, kite surfing and even surfboarding – Playa del Inglés, with its superb wind and waves, offers all the different type of water sports you can try here in Gran Canaria. However, you do have to keep your eyes open a bit. There is a separate motorsports area, but otherwise, there is no separate bathing area.
